Developmental work and a supporting oil painting as part of my research into the African culture. I have explored many topical issues such as poverty, tropical disease/physical disability, discrimination, famine and the influence of tourism.
The portrait embodies the visual impact of tribal body art - the way it is used to give a false impression of strength, power and status.I used an image of a child to highlight this and provide contrast between our idea of youth/ innocence and the Tribal way of life which challenges children to be strong and independant.
The painting incorporates realism with abstract background and I used acrylic paint to build a relief on the surface of the canvas.Oil/Acrylic on canvas(60x60cm)
